Many are familiar with chili con carne, the spicy Tex-Mex stew, but this is a meatless version of that – chili sin carne. In this recipe by Birkkala, ground broad beans are used instead of beef. The hotness of the stew can be controlled by adjusting the amount of chili: for those not accustomed to spicy food, a teaspoon of mild chili powder is enough to give the dish some kick. If desired, this chili sin carne with pearled spelt can be served with oat-based crème fraîche to balance out the heat.
